Into Orbit 2018-2019

Image
Hey Friends, This year we have tried something new. We gave everyone separate roles in our team, so we could specialize more in programming, presentation and project development, and engineering. This has helped us have smoother meetings and streamline our work. We are loving it so far! We have been working on the Into Orbit theme. We decided to work on the problem of how to spend free time in space on a long journey. We talked to and emailed a local counselor, Susan Richey, and a Psychology professor, Grant Corser. They helped us with some of the psychology side of the problem. We decided to make a game board that includes creative games as well as less competitive ones to help improve social activities. One of the judges at the scrimmage photographed above mentioned to use larger cards, so we thought that would be good too. We are looking forward to trying our programs and presenting our solution at the DSU state qualifier this weekend!

Progress Report

Hi, this is Coach Jenny. We are looking forward to the state competition at DSU this weekend. If you did not gather from our last post, as we researched more after the regional qualifier, we learned from John Kantor of the Utah County Search and Rescue team, that there are chemical resistant dry suits that can protect divers from chemicals in the water. The bad news was, that they cost $2,300 or more. We set a goal to raise as much money as we can to donate to our local search and rescue dive team toward a suit. So far we have had a lot of success: $230. Hurricane City $230. Washington County Water Conservancy District $50.   Anonymous cash donor at Hurricane City Council meeting $50.   Scholzen's Products $100. RVzz LLC *$300. Camping World *$1,000 Washington County Commission / Sheriff's office $55 Awesome Aunts and Uncles of the kids on our team This brings us to a total of $2,015. We are very happy with the results, and we have a couple more leads that may h

This is our team. It appears we aren't good at holding still:)  This is me, Vroom Vroom🏍. We were all very tired that day. This is me, Fire Cat🔥🐱,  on the left. We had lots of fun but it was very tiring. Hey, Pygmy Puff 101 here!🐹  (Farthest on the Right)  😀 I LOVED the competition! Problem was, I had a hard time sleeping because I had SEVERE cramps in my feet from walking so much.  Hi, this is Brooklyn👧! I was really, tired. (as you can tell).  Howdy! Cowboy here! 🤠! I am in this picture along with Percy Jackson. He is on the left, and as you can tell, he is very tired and grumpy. 🙁← That looks like him. I am on the right and happy, optimistic, and beautiful as ever. 😁!  I have no clue how the weirdos behind me are. 😕 I AM NOT TIRED AND GRUMPY!!! 👿 Gee cow guy, I'm not that kind a guy🍟 🔪  😄 👿 😈. I AM RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's me on the Left. I didn't like it so much toward the e

December: Scrimmage Time!

Image
Hey Everyone, This is Coach Jenny chiming in. We have had a busy November and December, making tons of progress in a short amount of time. We had a chance to reach out to Rico Delsesto, Assistant Professor of Physical Science/Chemistry at Dixie State University. He helped us find some answers to our questions about safety gloves in the water.  We look forward to sharing what we learned with the Search and Rescue soon. We had a breakthrough on our programming when we found this video about how to program with the gyro to make your robot go in a straight line.   This is us designing our t-shirts in photoshop. Working on more programming and testing our program.   And here we are the day of the scrimmage. Scrimmages are fun because they are a low stress way to experience what it will be like at the competition.  This is us in the practice tables room. We were across from the Savage Squirrels for this practice round. We learned a lot from watching other teams i

Today we talked to a water search and rescue liaison named Darrel Cashin about their problem with retrieving sunken boats underneath the water. The problem is the gloves are melting because of the chemicals in the used oil and gasoline from the boats. One of the chemicals was called hydro carbon. Neoprene is what their wet suits are made of. We are going to research for gloves that will protect them from any dangerous chemicals. The neoprene in the suit reacts with the chemicals in the water, and it can hurt the divers, and melt the suit. This can be expensive, and painful! Last week we completed our first successful mission! Here is a video:   How we felt when we completed this mission: Pygmy Puff 101: 😅😅😅😂😂😂 😈😈😈HHHHAAAAPPPPPPPPPYYYYYYYYY!!! RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR: Thank you stick (shtick) of wisdom! Pygmy Puff 101: I'm the weirdest person here, but right now I feel the most normal. Coach's thoughts: I am really proud of the kids for getting that first mi

Cowboy says: These are some of our T-Shirt design ideas.  Mine are the ones with C3PO in it. Pygmy Puff 101 says: We each drew one, I drew the one that shows BB8, R2D2, and BB8 has a glass of water. Percy Jackson's is the most violent. Can you guess which one? (AT-AT) RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR says: I drew the one with the upside down trash can with a sink on top. MMMMMMMM.
